How to Wear Mom Jean Shorts
I’m not usually a shorts person – I prefer to wear breezy dresses in the summer. But sometimes you need a pair of good jean shorts! Luckily, “mom shorts” or baggy shorts with long inseams are trending right now. Which is perfect for me because I am a mom. (lol) and prefer not to show my booty in short shorts.

How to Wear Mom Jean Shorts
I stopped at Madewell the other day because I was desperate for a pair of shorts. They didn’t have many options in store but they did have these Baggy Jean Shorts. I was worried they would be too loose and baggy but I sized down and they are perfect! They are exactly the kind of shorts I had in mind – relaxed but not sloppy, and with a long 7″ inseam!
Madewell Baggy Jean Shorts Review + Sizing
The Madewell Baggy Jean Shorts are more like a Mom Short in my opinion. They are fitted through the thigh and waist with a 11 1/4″ rise. So they do hit at my belly button. The material is 100% cotton and they don’t have stretch but somehow still feel broken-in. The inseam is looong – we’re talking a 7″ inseam! I would say my legs are on the scrawnier side and sometimes long shorts make me look like I have chicken legs. But these shorts don’t flare out too much at the bottom so I feel like they are still flattering on me – even though they hit at a smaller part of my leg.
I’m wearing the size 26 – which according to the size chart is 2 sizes down from my waist and hip measurements. I would say that I usually take a size 27 in denim though so technically I sized down one size. You can take your usual size for an actual baggy fit. Since these are 100% cotton they will relax even more. So I think after a few wears they will end up looking looser than they are now.
Mom Shorts with a Linen Vest
The look I had in mind for these mom jean shorts was a linen vest and cowboy boots! I got this vest awhile ago but never felt like I had the right bottoms to go with them. The vest hits pretty low on my chest so I felt like I needed more coverage on my bottom. I could pair this vest with the matching linen trousers but for those really hot days I felt like I needed more skin exposure.
The cowboy boots were a fun addition that might not be for everyone. The length of the shorts and the height of the boots does cut my legs off in a way that might not be flattering if you are on the shorter side or are trying to elongate your legs. The light tan color of the boots does help them to blend into my legs a bit more so I think if you are going for this look it’s better to wear a leather that matches your skin color.
