How to Style Oversized Blazers

Blazers are probably my favorite item in my closet because I feel there are endless ways to style them. And since I live in mild weather California, blazers double as light coats for me as well! But I want you to ditch those stuffy wear-to-work blazers! Today I’ll be talking about my favorite style blazer – the oversized, or boyfriend style, blazer!

I love the oversized cut because it’s just really comfortable. These blazers are supposed to be bigger and roomier –  like you are wearing your boyfriend’s blazer! I also like that they are longer and cover my bottom. Because who doesn’t love a little bum coverage? Especially on days when you might be feeling a little self-conscious about your backside. I also think oversized blazers instantly give you a chic, street style vibe. Your outfit might be a little boring but throw on an oversized blazer and you look so chic!

In case you are coming up short with ideas on how to style an oversized blazer, I’ve rounded up all the ways I’ve worn them!

How to Style Oversized Blazers

Oversized Blazer with Skirt

I love pairing my blazers with skirts – specifically midi skirts. An oversized blazer gives me lots of menswear vibes so pairing it with a skirt adds a little femininity to the look.

You’ll also notice that both of these blazers are plaid. Plaid, check, and houndstooth blazers are my favorite because they often have multiple colors in the pattern which makes it easy to mix and match with other items in your closet. I also love a plaid blazer because it makes it easy to add some print mixing to your look. I happen to be print mixing in both of these outfits! I love how the plaid blazer looks with a dotted pattern – like leopard print or small polka dots.

Oversized Blazer with High Waist, Vintage Style Denim

This is the way I’m most often wearing my oversized blazers. It’s just so easy to throw on a pair of jeans, tank, and blazer and call it a day. When I’m feeling fancy I accessorize with a fun pair of shoes and bag.

Of course, you can always pair your blazer with skinny jeans for a sleek look. But I prefer vintage style, straight leg jeans – always with a high waist. I think that style denim gives the look a more laid-back, cool girl vibe. I also prefer 100% cotton denim in a light wash. My favorite pair of jeans right now are the 90’s Cheeky Jean from Everlane which I’m wearing in the first photo.

These are my spring blazer looks. The first blazer is a wool blazer in a light lavender color which is great for crisp spring days when it’s still a little chilly outside. The second blazer is a linen blazer witch is perfect for warmer days.

Oversized Blazer with Cropped Wide Leg Pants

If you are tired of just wearing your blazers with denim, try a wide leg cropped pant instead! This look is definitely gives off a more relaxed, menswear inspired vibe.

You can see in the above looks that I’m sticking with a neutral color palette: Blacks, Browns, Greys, and Navy. I could mix and match any of these pieces together to create a slightly different look! I’m all about mixing and matching to re-wear items from my closet.

Both of these pants are from Everlane. Everlane makes my favorite wide leg crop pants. I have them in multiple colors!

My favorite places to get blazers are Everlane and Frank + Oak because they make high quality, ethical clothes. But I’ve also found more affordable blazers at Target!

More Style Tips:

  • Wear an Oversized Blazer Over a Dress – When I was pregnant I loved wearing my knit body-con dresses with an oversized blazer! Of course, that look also works if you aren’t pregnant!
  • Wear a Long, Oversized Blazers with Leggings – A long blazer acts like a tunic and looks great with a pair of leggings. This is my go-to style post-partum because I can pretty much only fit in leggings right now!
  • Add a Belt – If the boxy fit isn’t for you, you can add a belt over the blazer to cinch in the waist!
