How to pull off a "Grandpa Chic" Style Outfit

I didn’t even realize “Grandpa Chic” style was actually trending until I took photos of this outfit and thought “this looks like something a grandpa would wear”. I’m mainly seeing this trend in the home decor field but I think it’s also perfect for fall style. This summer I heard a lot about “Coastal Grandma” style but this fall I think it’s time for Grandpa to take center stage!

How to Pull off a Grandpa Chic Style Outfit

I would describe “Grandpa Chic” as a little bit preppy, a little bit Dark Academia, with a menswear touch. It really is as easy as imagining what an old British man studying in a library would wear. A quick Google search of “vintage british menswear fall fashion style” will give you some ideas. Basically I’m looking for cozy sweaters, chunky cardigans, tailored trousers, and classic patterns – all in neutral colors, of course.

Choose heavier fabrics + Classic Patterns

As I mentioned above, I look for menswear inspired pieces like blazers, trousers, chunky sweaters and cardigans, sweater vests, vintage jackets, and trench coats. The key is to choose these pieces in textured, heavy fabrics like wool, tweed, corduroy, and leather.

You also want to look for classic patterns like plaid, tartan, herringbone, houndstooth, and argyle. I love a wool plaid blazer and have several in my closet but don’t be afraid to try a pair of wool pants like in my example outfit!

I love these trousers because the print is neutral but still has some color to it. These happen to be relaxed with an elastic waist but a pair of tailored trousers works great too. My sweater is an oversized, fluffy alpaca jumper. Combined with the wool trousers it gives my outfit a very cozy, warm feel.

Choose Leather Accessories

Leather is a great material/texture to add to a “Grandpa Chic” outfit. Especially in the form of loafers. I have a lot of loafer styles but I love that this pair is croc-embossed leather. It adds more texture and interest to the outfit.
