The Classic Trench Coat

Trench Coats

One item I have on my list to buy this spring is a classic trench coat. Since this is a piece that never really goes out of style I would consider this a closet staple. You’ll be able to wear this coat year after year which is why I suggest investing in a quality piece.

What makes up a classic trench coat?

A classic trench would be made of 100% cotton with a lining. You’ll find a lot of the inexpensive versions a mix of cotton and polyester or nylon and some without linings. Trench coats are typically double breasted with ten buttons on the front.

It’s all in the details:

You’ll often see epaulettes (or shoulder tabs), storm flap, hook and eye throat latch, belt with d-ring, sleeve straps, deep yoke back saddle, wedge back and buttoned storm pockets.

A great example of a classic trench coat is the Burberry Trench. But at 1,795 it’s WAY over my price range. So what are the affordable options? One that has almost all of the details above is the Banana Republic Classic Trench – and it’s $230! I’m also really liking the J.Crew Icon Trench. It’s under $300 and also has a lot of the details that make up a classic trench. I tried on the BR trench and unfortunately the XS was still a little big. The J.Crew version has extended sizing so I’m hoping that one might fit me a little better. I also just ordered this one from ASOS as a back up in case the J.Crew one doesn’t work out. I love the details and it’s only $100 – but it’s not 100% cotton so I’m not sure if I’ll like the feel.

Luckily, there are a lot of options in a variety of price ranges so you can be sure to find one that fits your style!

  1. I LOVE LOVE LOVE a good trench coat! They’re such a wardrobe staple. I especially love ones with zip-in wool liners — I can wear it through most of winter too!
