With temperatures cooling down (in most parts of the US!) that means cold and flu season is upon us. And nothing cramps your style like being stuck at home with a cold. Last year I was working with preschoolers and I got sick A LOT. So I was constantly turing to hot tea for relief. Hot tea is a proven home remedy for soothing sore throats, helping to ease symptoms of colds, and providing comfort.
Obviously, tea is important to me (hence the name Jeans and a Teacup!) and when I choose my tea I always go for Bigelow because of their quality ingredients and the way they package their tea in foil packages to guarantee freshness. Bigelow takes pride in how they make their tea and they want you to #TeaProudly with them!
And while tea on it’s own is great for providing relief, I decided to find a recipe with a little extra kick to help fight off those colds. The Bigelow Green Tea “Cold Busting” Recipe includes, Bigelow green tea, turmeric, cinnamon, honey and hot water. Green tea contains lots of antioxidants but when you are feeling bad sometimes you need something a little more powerful. Turmeric, cinnamon and honey also have lots of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties – all good things to help you fight off your cold! This powerful combo will help improve your immune system as well!
And it’s super simple to make!
BIGELOW GREEN TEA “COLD BUSTING” INGREDIENTS:
- 1 Bigelow Green Tea bag
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 2 cups water
- honey to taste
Boil the turmeric and cinnamon in water. Turn off heat and let tea bag steep in water for 2-3 minutes. Add as much honey as you want to taste!
This tea definitely has a kick to it! Turmeric is a popular spice used in India so it actually reminds me of Indian food!
I found the Bigelow Green Tea at my local Walmart in the tea and coffee isle. They had a wide selection to choose from including Green Tea with Lemon and Lemon Ginger which both sound amazing.
You can also find Bigelow Tea on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!
OTHER COLD BUSTING TIPS:
In addition to tea I also turn to essential oils, diffusers and humidifiers when I have a cold! I love using an Immune Strength essential oil mix in my diffuser at nigh while I’m sleeping. This oil blend when inhaled is supposed to help boost your immune system. It’s also important to stay hydrated when you are sick so in addition to drinking lots of water I also like to use a humidifier at night. All of these things help me to wake up without a sore throat in the morning!
And call me crazy but I like some spicy food when I’m sick to help clear my sinuses! Instead of chicken soup I love a big bowl of Pho! I feel like it has a lot of great spices and fresh ingredients which makes it a better alternative to canned chicken soup.
What are YOUR tips for beating a cold?
I’m not going to lie, I HATE tea but when I am sick I always reach for it because it warms me up and I think always makes me feel better!

I’m with you on diffusing Immune Strength! I have that exact same brand. 🙂 I’m diffusing it right now with some sweet orange to try and keep my kids and I healthy. I love that you have a cold busting tea recipe. Very creative, I’ll have to try it. Thanks for sharing! #client
I rarely drink tea except for when I am sick or have a sore throat. I have that same brand. I like to add a little lemon to it too
I love drinking tea too! Green tea is so great and I love a little dash of honey and lemon added to it! I haven’t tried cinnamon or tumeric so next cold I’ll totally try it!
