I always find it hard to pick out outfits in between seasons. Towards the end of summer all the fall pieces start hitting the shelf and I want to start wearing sweaters and boots! However, summer temperatures usually stick around for awhile – especially in California! So what’s a fall-loving girl to do?

How to Dress for Fall When It’s Still Hot Outside

Choose Fall Colors

I always start reaching for autumnal hues and neutrals when the summer comes to an end. In the above outfit I chose a brown and tan neutral color palette. A few of my favorite fall colors are burgundy, mustard, dark green, and navy so you’ll be seeing a lot of these shades in the coming months!

Choose Fall Fabrics, Prints, and Textures

I always end up gravitating towards corduroy, leather, velvet, and wool when I want to add a little “fall” to my outfit. It’s time to put away the linen folks! Of course, I think these fabrics need to be used in moderation or else you run the risk of overheating! In this outfit I went with a faux leather mini skirt. I still get that luxe look but my legs are bare so it’s still appropriate for the 80 degree weather. Another option could be a corduroy, suede, or wool skirt. (I have this corduroy skirt in my wardrobe that I can’t wait to wear!).

I’ll also wear knits that give off “sweater” vibes but I’ll look for more open knits or short-sleeved or sleeveless sweaters.

Another option is to choose lightweight, long sleeved tops in fall colors – like the top I’m wearing in today’s outfit. I chose a lightweight silk blouse in a light brown snakeskin print. Even though it’s long sleeved it still feels really light and breezy. I also think the snakeskin print gives it a textured appearance. And texture is always great in fall outfits!

Now’s the time to incorporate your plaids, houndstooth, and dark floral pieces into your outfits. The skirt I’m wearing would also look great with a dark floral blouse!

Switch Up Your Shoes

If you want to start dressing for fall, it’s time to put away the sandals and open toed shoes. Opt for booties, closed toe pumps, or loafers. I love breaking out my booties when summer starts coming to an end! Even when the weather is warm, I still feel comfortable in them. I usually skip the socks in my booties but you could opt for thin bootie socks.

I chose white booties for this outfit because I liked the contrast. I think the white makes them “pop” more in this outfit. These are actually off white or bone colored so it’s not a stark white. I think they work great as a fall/winter bootie!

Choose Lightweight Jackets

When the weather starts to get a little cooler you can start adding lightweight layers to your outfit. A drapey blazer, or unlined jacket are good options.
